Summary of The Kite Runner

We met to discuss The Kite Runner on Sunday, March 16, at Panera in Maple Grove.

Our discussion was interesting and lively. Everyone had good comments on the characters and events of the story. We discussed relationship between fathers and sons compared to Baba and Amir’s and the cultural differences between theirs and American culture. We compared Amir and Hassan’s relationship to Baba and Ali’s.

We agreed the book took on “a movie” look part way through and that the author in some cases tied up too many loose ends to make events plausible.

The book made us more aware of the country and its history and how the invasion by Russia opened the way for the Taliban to take control. We discussed the way that religion sometimes is used as an excuse to be cruel. Also how the circumstances of a person’s birth played a role as in this book.

We liked the author’s descriptions and writing style and decided it was an emotional and thought provoking story that was well worth reading.

Sharon

Thanks Sharon, for leading the discussion and also for introducing the colored "stickies". I bet all of our books will have a few stickies in them next time!

Thanks, Sharon, I'm glad I read the book. Your commentary is wonderful - wow, YOU can write, and very well!

I'm updating this comment also - I meant that I really enjoyed reading what you wrote, Sharon, and was so impressed with how you write. Without The Family Read, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to be reminded of your writing talent.

I need to take my time when I post comments - you've probably all noticed that I comment alot, and it's usually done very quickly--

Patty - will the Random House stuff be of any help planning our next meeting? Does it only have benefits when you use a Random House book?

Hi Teresa,

I like all your comments!---Random House will give us 25% off of our purchase of 8 books or more...not sure if that's a deal---but I haven't looked at their prices either. The website, randomhousereaderscircle.com is just a website I found while "surfing" and I entered our group. I've been to the site once---it's fun to see what books are coming up and to read reviews and I'm sure there must be some tips on book clubs too.

My hope is that everyone feels free to meet wherever and do whatever they would like when it's their time to host the book club.

I think it's all been good so far...It's nice to set aside time just for myself---the reading and also meeting as a group.

Ooops, it's just randomhouse.com.
